HoopYogini™ Certified Instructor, Lori Jacobsen of South Carolina talks about hooping and self-love.
Tell us how you start hooping.
Lori: I started hooping as an alternative to going to the gym. I saw a girl at a festival and she blew my mind and it made me want to try. I struggled the first few months, gave it up for periods of time, but always came back. I joined a weekly hoop jam hosted by Jocelyn in 2010 (I think) and I started to see how transformative hooping could be. I started practicing more and I started to see results. I could do more tricks and I was losing weight, I was feeling less depressed (having struggled for many years) and I was feeling much more hopeful. I truly credit hooping to changing my life.
Tell us about a time when you were a student.
Lori: I love ah-ha moments. When flow happens, when a trick just clicks. I never took formal hoop classes, but started attending workshops and hoop focused retreats in 2012. I have had many amazing moments and some brilliant improvements through these events. The gift of sharing the hoop with others is really quite special, and I’m thankful to have learned from some of the best… Anah, Shakti, Baxter, Caroleeena, Spiral, Shellie White Light and of course, Jocelyn Gordon (who is truly my first introduction to hoop dance and fitness). I consider myself a student of life, we are constantly growing and learning, always changing and I like that. It doesn’t mean it’s easy, but if you put effort into, you can learn anything in time. I LOVED it when I finally figured out how to thread the needle while learning from Caroleeena; it just clicked! Practice and being open to trying a new way is always important too.
What do you love about teaching?
Lori: I teach a lot of kids and I LOVE IT. I love the moment when the trick just clicks for them and all they want to do is show you: I GOT IT! The joy, the elation, the positive reinforcement of trying, not giving up and eventually succeeding is so powerful. I wish more people had the opportunity to have those moments, at all ages, so that’s why I decided to further my own teaching with HoopYogini™ , so that I can share this gift with more people.
What you love about hooping, or what has hooping meant for you?
Lori: Hooping has changed my life. I have lost a significant amount of weight (~40 lbs) and I have gained so much more confidence in myself. Hooping has taught me more about self love than any other activity or practice I have ever been a part of. I love the hooping community and the beautiful friendships I have gained from being part of it. Hooping has become almost a magic porthole to a better life, through practice, improved confidence, and healthful living.
Give us a little background about yourself as a teacher.
Lori: I think I was born to teach. I’ve been tutoring, mentoring, teaching, facilitating since I was old enough to do so. I helped kids in my neighborhood after school, I was a camp counselor for six years, went to college for teaching, and have spent the majority of my years since then working with children and young adults, as a mentor, a care giver, a tutor, a coach and a hoop teacher. I’m a “Maven, an information broker, sharing and trading what I know” (The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell).
What do you love about HoopYogini™?
Lori: I love the feeling I get when I connect to Source, find my breath, feel my strength rise from within, and receive the lift practice gives me. It opens up my heart and helps clear my mind. I feel the ease and I enjoy the effort, as it’s in harmony. I really feel that the combination of hoop dance, yoga and mindful meditation is a gift that is accessible to all through this practice and I want all people to have an opportunity to experience HoopYogini™ and feel the movement, the connection, and take away something positive in every session.
Can you share a bit of your message, values, and aspirations as a teacher and hooper?
Lori: I am all about spreading joy, being positive, making my dreams into reality. LOVE. I try to see love in every situation. I am patient and kind and I truly believe in leading by example.
Do you have a favorite color (of the moment)?
Lori: I love pink. But I’m also a big fan of rainbows and anything that glitters.
