Symbiosis (part 1): Good Medicine
2012
Five months ago, I had a strong knowing that I would attend, that I HAD TO attend, the Symbiosis Eclipse event at Pyramid Lake Pauite Native American Reservation in Nixon, Nevada. An intentional gathering centered around the May 20, 2012 solar eclipse, Symbiosis brought together and celebrated native wisdom, tribal dance culture, sacred land, electronic music, galactic activity and transformational art.
The HAD TO attend feeling grew into a NEED TO attend endeavor that allowed a beautiful co-creation between myself and Hoopnotica. Hoopnotica provides adult hoop dance education and dance fitness hoops. I’ve had the pleasure of supporting the Hoopnotica Teacher Training program as their former Director of Teacher Training and have a deep affection for their training curriculum. Hoopnotica sponsored my presence at Symbiosis and led to lovely interactions on the Pyramid Lake playa.

The hoop, the circle, is a benign symbol ~ you can put in what you need (philosophy, intention, vision) and you can take out what you don’t (dogma, judgment, rigidity). It’s familiar, it’s maverick (the wheel anyone?), it’s smooth, it’s friendly. As all of the above, it’s a transformational tool that wields its simplicity into a gift that offers good medicine ~ improved mood, toned body, present moment awareness, yummy daydreams, gorgeous interactions, new friendships, expansive community, awareness of your oneness with all of creation (everything spins!).

Dancing on the Pyramid Lake terrain (yes, there’s a lake on this land and in it is an island with a rock formation that looks like a pyramid) and through the Symbiosis village life, I observed bonds being strengthened, minds expanding, bodies stretched and hearts opening. Good medicine.

I witnessed the unabashed expression of art so deliciously blending science, technology, sacred geometry, spatial design, glass, metal, sound, movement, photography, lasers, textiles, on and on. From the Satya Yuga village design to the Eclipse stage, the Yoga of Bass Workshop to the Random Rab set during the Eclipse, my sensory system was impressed with art boasting courage, beauty and intelligence. As I write this, the term, “Vinyasa” comes to mind. Generally speaking, it has imprinted on our common vernacular as a flowing sequence of hatha yoga postures. In exploration, it means “to place a certain way, with intelligence and intention.” This is what I witnessed at Symbiosis.

Traveling with my hoop, listening to the music, carrying on and participating, my appreciation for humanity swelled. We really are so brilliant.
I love the brilliance revealed at these intentional gatherings. I love the brilliance revealed in the Hoopnotica curriculum which allows different learning styles – visual, auditory, kinesthetic – to develop skill and find flow inside the hoop. I love that my life and resume includes explorations as a Professional Hula Hooper and Educator. I love that my karma leads me to have my mind blown by seeing the beauty that abounds. I love that I receive reminders that I have choice; that We have choice. We can take out what’s not working and put in what will.

Hoop Exploration
If you have a hoop, take a moment to find yourself in it. As you push and power the hoop, let your mind journey towards self-criticism. Notice what happens – the hoop drops. Now get back into the hoop. Turn, spin, move around and bring forth what you appreciate about life, your family, yourself. Let the hoop move around your body and consider how you give back to your community ~ through your smile, presence, art and service. I’m sure you’ll find flow. The hoop, the circle allows us to take out what we don’t need and put in/acknowledge what we do. Good medicine.
Symbiosis put forth an experience where we work together, where our natural and developed talents get to shine and contribute, where we cooperate with the universe through intention. At 6:30pm on May 20th, the annular solar eclipse reached its maximum point, the moon perfectly shadowing the center and majority of the sun. To me, the eclipse looked like a button ~ a “YES!” button, a “Just Push Play” button. I pushed it and I think many others did too. If you haven’t already, push it now and allow your integrative brilliance to shine.
